Footsteps In The Dark
albertz benda, New York, NY
2022
A series of paintings which attempt to address the double bind of representation: on some level we all desire to see ourselves represented, however no single representation can fully render the complexity of an individual. The works engage in “denied portraiture” where the figures are depicted with their backs turned, through insufficient light, or through personal possessions. The paintings are meant to acknowledge their presence but also their ultimate unknowability in a single image.
The show is the first to inact the artist’s residual sale model in which 10% of all resale profit from a portrait is given to the subject of the portrait in perpetuity for the market life of the work.
